LITHUANIA
You will love Lithuania. From the very first sight when you enter the Old Town of Vilnius you will love those curved gothic streets, beautiful old buildings, small cafes, and the nice and polite local people. You will see unspoiled wild nature and breathtaking sand dunes on the coast. You will visit ancient castles and churches. You will listen to authentic folklore dating back to the times when Lithuanians were still pagans in Europe. You will taste Lithuanian meals - maybe sometimes too filling - but always cooked and presented with soul and hospitality which comes so naturally to these people.
Of course, Lithuania's main attraction is Vilnius, the capital, featuring architectural diversity from Gothic to Baroque and Classicism. You will find here a world-renowned heritage which placed the Old Town of Vilnius on UNESCO's prestigious World Heritage List in 1995. Travellers visiting Vilnius nowadays are especially lucky because they have an excellent opportunity to see the famous Vilnius Cathedral Treasure displayed in the Exhibition of Christianity in Lithuanian Art.
A must-see attraction is the fairy tale Medieval Castle in Trakai set amidst lakes and located just 30 minutes' drive from the centre of Vilnius.
The other major towns in Lithuania are Kaunas and Klaipeda, Lithuaniana's window to the Baltic Sea. Each has a well-preserved Old Town, quite small in size, but attractive for their Russian and German heritage, interesting museums, and the quiet and relaxed provincial way of life. Neringa (Curonian Spit) is one of Lithuaniana's most spectacularly beautiful places, and area of unspoilt nature, dense forests and refreshing sea breezes.
Visited by Pope John Paul II, the Hill of the Crosses, outside Siauliai, is yet another highlight and one of the most important symbols of Lithuanian nationhood.
Lithuania does not have high breathtaking mountains. Its beautiful landscape consists rather of natural forests and low hills, often interrupted by meandering rivers and lakes. National parks offer amazing scenery and unforgettable experiences to explore and enjoy nature by walking, cycling, canoeing or riding on horseback.
No description, however, could be better than your own experience. Discover Lithuania yourself by contacting Poltours and booking a short break to Vilnius or tour of Lithuania.
