Graceful, elegant
and romantic, St Petersburg is one of the most beautiful cities in the world.
It was founded in 1703 by Peter the Great, and is often described as the "Venice
of the North" because it is built on a series of Islands and an intricate
network of canals and bridges.
The harmonious
array of palaces and gilded spires are a sight to behold in the Winter with glistening
snow and in Summer for the famed "White nights" when the sun sets for
no more than 40 minutes.
St Petersburg is
home to the renowned Hermitage Museum - one of the greatest art collections in
the world and the world-famous Kirov Ballet.
