For centuries Gdansk
had been a very important and strategically-placed Baltic port. The interesting
architecture of the Old Town features mainly Gothic and Renaissance elements.
Narrow cobbled
streets, old Dutch-style burghers' houses and beautiful waterfront promenades
create a very interesting city break destination in a relaxing atmosphere.
The city was the
cradle of the Solidarity movement which eventually helped to overthrow the communist
regime in the early 90's.
